Most Americans are probably still heated from the recent issue concerning the Middle East. I'm talking about the horrific attack in Libya on September 11, 2012. All we hear is that some Americans die and we quickly use their deaths as political strategies to point fingers and play the blame game; however, thank god for people like Hillary Clinton who recently took blame for whatever happened and emphasized strongly that we shouldn't abandon our quest to help the Middle East. It's people like her that give me hope because many Americans don't know both sides of the story so they quickly jump on the "I hate Muslims wagon" without really understanding their side. Well, I'm here to shed some light with my own experiences and testimonies belonging to my Iranian family members.
For those who need a brief description on what the Libya attack is and why it happened here's one: some random guy made a video depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad, which isn't suppose to happen, and worse not in an improper manner. Then, this video went viral and caused a huge uproar in the Middle East. I don't think the reaction of the Muslims to this video would have been as dramatic if the people weren't as vulnerable and emotional after this whole revolution situation. Anyways, the people went crazy and some radicals,...AGAIN..."SOME radicals", went to take some American diplomats hostage. 3 American deaths resulted from this attack including an additional death of a U.S. Ambassador.
Now here's my take on the situation, which kind of chimes in with Clinton's; this event should not impact our goal to mend relations with the Middle East nor should we use this as another reason to hate on the Muslim people because a few criminals don't represent the whole community of Muslims. Firstly, Americans should understand that as sad as the deaths of these Americans are, they did choose dangerous jobs in a place that's undergoing severe stress and hostility. Secondly, no death should go unnoticed but truth be told if they have killed 1,000 of our people: We have killed 100,000 of theirs, so in what pedestal do we stand do make such an ordeal when we are slaughtering their people by the minute? Thirdly, Some Americans argue that the radical reactions of violence some of these Muslims have expressed are too extreme and some have compared Jesus to Mohammad by stating that they don't care if some media makes fun of Jesus, but here's the thing: those people who acted violently are just a small number compared to the majority that was against violence. Also, the whole comparison of Jesus and Mohammad is not a great argument because as stated in the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, "Christianity and Judaism have had thousands of years to grow into ancient religions while Islam in religion years is still a teenager". Oliver from the show even highlighted what Christians were doing at the age Islam is in today's times. "Let's not forget about the bloody crusades"! See, no religion is perfect!
All I know is that as an American citizen, who is half Iranian and has lived in Iran for 2 years, the people are not what America's media projects at all. Middle Eastern people are lovely, peaceful, and desperate for democracy. They are just in the worst situation ever because their governments are all about dictatorship and extremism and to top it all off, they love to piss off the big dogs. You'll soon learn that these big dogs included Israel, U.S.A. and others; however, going back to the people it's unfortunate that their governments don't play nice with the big dogs because we hit them hard with war and create this indescribable hate with yellow journalism painting them as unsophisticated and barbaric human beings. I'm here to say that this is not the case and please educate yourselves because they too want peace. In the end we all benefit with being allies and another war will just drown us more into debt. Let's find another solution to fixing this problem without losing more precious lives and money that could be bettering our country.
